- IRMA MARY GRANT (nee JENKINS) 1926 - 2015 Irma Grant, respected teacher of Mathematics and «u»WWII «/u» Veteran, died August 15, 2015 at 89 years. Irma and her 5 siblings grew up in Hamilton, ON. In 1942 she was awarded the Toronto Conservatory of Music's Silver Medal for Grade X Singing and won the Ellen Ambrose Memorial Scholarship for singing in 1943. After working briefly at a canning factory, Irma joined the CWAC in 1944 as a Kine Theodolite Operator. The army offered university education to its Veterans, but Irma was refused because she was a woman with a child. Instead they offered teacher training and Irma obtained a teaching licence in 1950. She taught in a one-room schoolhouse in New Brunswick before moving to Toronto. By 1976 she had earned her MA in Mathematics at the University of Toronto. While teaching Math, attending university and raising 5 children, Irma also travelled, renovated her home and was an accomplished artist. In 1987 she moved to Nobel, ON. In retirement she earned a BA in Pure Mathematics at York University, graduating Summa Cum Laude and being named to the Dean's Honour Roll. Studying with Professor Allan Trojan, she developed an interest in elliptic functions and continued to work on this for many years. Irma spent her last 28 years at her home on Dillon Road, finding peace in the natural surroundings. Irma made many friends over the years and her family thanks all of you who welcomed her.
